Description & Purpose
The purpose of this plan is to provide the proposed assignment of electrical and electronic reference designations prior to application on the hardware, drawings, parts lists, manuals and other technical publications.
Application & Interrelationship
This Data Item Description (DID) contains the format and content preparation instructions for the data product generated by the specific and discrete task requirement as delineated in the contract.
This plan shall not be implemented on the hardware, drawings, parts lists, manuals, and other technical publications until it has been approved by the Government.
This DID supersedes DI-E-5185B.
Preparation Instructions
10.1Reference documents.The applicable issue of the documents cited herein, including their approval dates and dates of any applicable amendments, notices, and revisions, shall be as specified in the contract.
10.2Format.The plan may be in the contractor's format.
10.3Content.The plan shall contain the following:
10.3.1Drawing.A drawing depicting the assignment of electrical and electronic reference designations. The drawing shall depict all assemblies and subassemblies of each unit of equipment, showing them in the approximate physical locations they will occupy in the actual equipment, and shall show the reference designation proposed for each assembly and subassembly. An associated cross reference table shall list each plug-in assembly and the reference designation of the socket into which each is plugged.
10.3.2Unit numbering method.The unit numbering method shall be used and be in accordance with Section 4 (Figure 11) of IEEE STD 200-1975/ANSI Y32.16-1975.
10.3.2.1If the equipment is so designated that two or more different assemblies may be used alternatively at one location.If the equipment has a socket that is vacant (does not have an assembly plugged into it), a reference designation shall be reserved for the vacant socket.
10.3.2.2When a series of plug-in assemblies is desiredWhen a series of plug-in assemblies is desired with the capability of mounting discrete logic modules in a fixed array, but various module locations are left empty on individual assemblies in the series, reference designations shall be assigned to module locations in strict numerical sequence, starting in the upper left-hand corner of the assembly and progressing from left to right and from top to bottom.
10.3.3Hybrid printed circuits.The designation of deposited components on hybrid printed circuits shall be in accordance with Section 7 of IEEE STD 200-1975/ANSI Y32.16-1975.
10.3.4Marking on equipment.The reference designator marking on the equipment shall be in accordance with Section 8 of IEEE STD 200-1975/ANSI Y32.16-1975.
