High-impact shock test procedures outline the steps that the contractor proposes to demonstrate the resistance of the system being tested to high-impact mechanical shock.
a. This data item description (DID) contains the format, content, and intended use information for the data deliverable resulting from the work task described in 3.1.1.3, 3.1.8, 3.1.9, and 3.1.10.1 of MIL-DTL-901.
This request applies whenever equipment or systems are to be shock qualified by high-impact shock testing in accordance with the requirements of MIL-DTL-901.
b. This DID supersedes DI-ENVR-80709.
Preparation Instructions
1Reference Documents.The applicable issue of the documents cited herein, including their approval dates and dates of any applicable amendments, notices, and revisions, shall be as specified in the contract.
2Format.The test procedures shall be in the contractor's format.
3Content.The test procedures shall contain the following information:
3.1Equipment Identification.The test procedures shall include the following identification information.
3.1.1.6Military specification and technical manual numbers
3.1.2Manufacturer (name and address).
3.1.3Model number, part number, and serial number (as applicable).
3.1.4Size or capacity (if applicable).
3.1.5Plan numbers (sectional assembly and outline; revision and date).
3.1.6Approximate overall size of the equipment.
3.1.7Weight (wet, dry, and total weight including test fixture, wet and dry).
3.1.8Height of center-of-gravity above base of equipment.
3.1.9Contract or purchase order number.
3.1.10Requirements of MIL-DTL-901 (see classifications in 1.2 of MIL-DTL-901).
3.1.10.6Mounting location and ship type
3.1.10.7Mounting plane aboard ship represented during shock test
3.1.10.8Mounting orientation aboard ship represented during shock test
3.1.11Hold-down bolts (and any other hold-down or locating devices) used for attachment of items to their foundation or test fixture during shock tests.
3.1.12Hold-down bolt torque.
3.1.13Description of external and internal resilient mounts, if used.
3.1.13.5Mount manufacturer
3.1.14Major components and attached items in test (name, identification, manufacturer).
3.1.15Test laboratory and address.
3.1.16Test instrumentation and monitoring equipment, if any.
3.2Test Procedures.The test procedures shall include:
3.2.1Purpose and objectives of tests to be conducted.
3.2.2Activity whose representative(s) will witness both the shock test and the post-shock test inspection and functional testing (see 6.7.2 of MIL-DTL-901).
3.2.3Alternative representative(s) (Defense Contract Management Agency [DCMA], Supervisor of Shipbuilding [SUPSHIP], System Command [SYSCOM] project engineer, etc.) who will witness tests in 3.2.b above in the event the specified witness cannot schedule attendance.
3.2.4Step-by-step test procedures for each operating condition.
3.2.5Method of mounting items for test (designate test fixtures to be used, machine-specific requirements, such as medium weight shock machine mounting requirements in accordance with 3.1.6.3 of MIL-DTL-901, etc.).
3.2.7Simulation of shipboard connections, such as cabling, piping, etc., during shock test.
3.2.8Test item operational requirements (functional requirements).
3.2.9Fixture drawings or references for standard or non-standard test fixtures required for conducting lightweight, medium weight, heavyweight, and medium weight deck simulating shock tests with justification that the fixture meets the requirements of MIL-DTL-901.
3.2.10Requirements, if any, for on-site evaluation of test instrumentation results.All test instrumentation data evaluations needed to show compliance with acceptance criteria (including criteria, if any, regarding momentary malfunctions) shall be identified for on-site performance to ensure recognition of discrepant conditions before proceeding with additional shock blows, shots, or drops.
3.3Detailed Post-Shock Test Functional Testing Procedures.Include the following in separate sections for the equipment under test:
3.3.1Functional tests, including:
3.3.1.1Input-output of component or equipment
3.3.1.2Operating procedures (bearing and coil winding)
3.3.1.3Cyclic operations to determine compliance with design specifications
3.3.2Hydrostatic tests, including:
3.3.2.1Hydraulic, pneumatic, and fluid system equipment
3.3.2.2Demonstration of strength
3.3.3Electrical tests, including:
3.3.3.1Insulation breakdown (shorts)
3.3.3.2Electrical continuity
3.4Comparison with Operational Requirements.Define the procedures for reporting the results of the comparison of the specified test item operational requirements contained in 3.2.h above with the results of the post-shock functional testing.
3.5Detailed Post-Shock Inspection Procedures and Criteria.Include the inspection procedures in separate sections for the equipment under test to determine:
3.5.6Cracks (dye penetrant, radiographic, or magnetic particle)
3.5.8Critical tolerance clearances
3.6Pre-Shock Test versus Post-Shock Test Configuration Comparison.Define the procedures for reporting the results of the comparison between the pre-shock test and post-shock test configurations of the equipment under test.
3.7Shock Test Acceptance Criteria.Include grade A shock test acceptance criteria if these are not specified by applicable acquisition documents. Include the following:
3.7.1Minimum acceptable performance parameters.
3.7.1.2Dielectric strength
3.7.1.3Pressure-tight integrity
3.7.2Extent of momentary malfunction, if permitted.
3.7.3Degree of permanent functional impairment allowed.
