Description & Purpose
3.1 The purpose of the sketch is to communicate certain manufacturing and inspection requirements between the contractor and the Government.
Application & Interrelationship
7.1 This Data Item Description (DID) contains the format and content preparation instructions for a forging manufacturing sketch generated by the specific and discrete task requirement as delineated in the contract.
7.2 This DID is applicable to the acquisition of forgings for military equipment.
Preparation Instructions
10.1Format.The data shall be in the form of an engineering sketch with sufficient clarity and detail to show the required content.
10.2.1Company trademark or symbol.
10.2.2Authority signature.
10.2.4Part name or number.
10.2.5Drawing number of applicable part.
10.2.7The shape of the forging at the principle steps in the forging process in sufficient detail to determine the direction of metal flow.
10.2.8The shape and dimensions of the as-forged forging showing:
10.2.8.1The location from which test specimens will be taken.
10.2.8.2The dimensions of the finished part superimposed on the sketches of the as-forged forging.
10.2.8.3Location of marking.
10.2.9Shape and dimensions of the forging at time of ultrasonic inspection, if specified, and the direction of ultrasonic scanning to achieve coverage of 100 percent of the volume of the forging.
