Description & Purpose

This forging history provides complete metallurgical data for the rudder stock(s) to assist in the structural design of rudders and their supports and to facilitate repair of the stock(s) during the life of the ship.

Application & Interrelationship

This DID contains the format and content preparation instructions for the data product generated by the specific and discrete task requirement as delineated in the contract.

This DID is applicable to all metal alloy rudder stock forgings.

This DID supersedes UDI-E-23105A.

Preparation Instructions

10.1Format.The forging history shall be typewritten or computer printed on 8-1/2" X 11" white paper using contractor format. Any nonstandard abbreviation shall be defined. If necessary, one-way foldouts may be used for oversized descriptive material. All pages and attachments or enclosures shall be securely bound together.

10.2General.The Rudder Stock Forging History shall document in detail the results of chemical and physical testing of the forging(s). The Rudder Stock Forging History introductory information identifying the forging manufacturer, the shipbuilding contractor, the contract number, and the ship to receive the forgings.

10.3Content.The rudder stock forging history shall also include:

10.3.1The results of chemical analyses of all forging heats.

10.3.2The size of the forging(s) at the time of heat treatment.

10.3.3The heat treatment and tempering temperatures and durations.

10.3.4The results of mechanical test performed on each forging to show conformance with the applicable material specification.

10.3.5The forging history shall include any descriptive material, i.e., tables, charts, sketches, drawings, calculations, or photographs necessary to clarify or explain the text.
