Description & Purpose
3.1 The Depot Maintenance Study lists reparable items and the tools required for depot maintenance. All requirements in areas such as qualitative, inspection, special skills, space and facilities, and time standards are included in this study.
3.2 The Depot Maintenance Study is used to determine manpower, skill, tooling, and space required for depot support.
Application & Interrelationship
7.1 This Data Item Description (DID) contains the format and content preparation instructions for the data product generated by the specific and discrete task requirement as delineated in the contract.
7.2 This DID supersedes DI-S-1815.
Preparation Instructions
10.1Reference documents.The applicable issue of the documents cited herein, including their approval dates and dates of any applicable amendments, notices, and revisions shall be as specified in the contract.
10.2Format.The Depot Maintenance Study format shall be as indicated in each appendix description.
10.3Content.The Depot Maintenance Study shall contain the following appendices:
10.3.1Appendix A.A list of reparable items in generation breakdown sequence, including applicable National Stock Number (NSN), failure rates, and a listing of the shops or areas within a typical depot affected by each line item. Pertinent special remarks shall be included.
10.3.2Appendix B.A cross-reference to Appendix A, listing Appendix A items in Part Number sequence.
10.3.3Appendix C.Lists to include quantity of common and special tools, required for depot maintenance. This shall consist of the following:
10.3.3.1A complete description of all tools, test and handling equipment required in each operation area, identified alphabetically by noun name, stock number or manufacturer's number sufficient to identify the item.
10.3.3.2All items indicated in (a) above shall be justified, and the operation performed by each item shall be described.
10.3.3.3Listing of items in (a) above shall be keyed to the suggested shop layouts to indicate location where item is required.
10.3.4Appendix D.Outline the qualitative requirements for the Product Assurance Program necessary for depot maintenance of the given materiel.
10.3.4.1Identify the acceptance inspection equipment required for the rebuild of each hardware item.
10.3.4.2Specify any special requirements for reliability, maintainability, nuclear hardness or assessment, test, demonstration or evaluation during maintenance.
10.3.4.3Outline herein the program and procedures for incoming inspection.

10.3.5Appendix E.Information and recommendations on space and facilities requirements in support of depot maintenance. This shall consist of the following:
10.3.5.1Layouts clearly delineating square feet of area required for major operation, by shop, by supporting common facilities and total overall area.
10.3.5.2Contractor's suggested layouts drawn to a scale of 1/8 inch equals one foot.
10.3.5.3Supporting facilities, such as electrical power outlets, high or low pressure air outlets, etc., indicated at each outlet or facility source.
10.3.5.4Special maintenance areas, such as environmental controlled areas, indicated on suggested layouts and justified by indicating the items requiring such special areas; and additionally, the tolerance, or special requirements that make such mandatory. The degree of control and permissible tolerance shall be indicated for listed environmental control areas.
10.3.5.5Special skills and techniques on a suggested shop staffing and organizational chart and keyed to the shop layouts to indicate the operations required of such listed special skills.
10.3.5.6A numbered sequence listing of major operations for production planning purposes keyed to the suggested shop layouts to indicate the operation performed in each area.
10.3.5.7Information required in the above paragraphs shall be based on an estimated workload of the following:
10.3.5.7.1Complete system overhaul/rebuild
10.3.5.7.2End item overhaul/rebuild
10.3.5.7.3Secondary item overhaul/rebuild (components, assemblies, subassemblies).
10.3.6Appendix F.List of plug-in type component boards used for major end items, weapon systems, and ground support equipment.
10.3.7Appendix G.List of Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) codes extracted from the Defense Supply Agency Handbook H 4-2, which applies to those codes appearing in Appendices C and D, above.
10.3.8Appendix H.Rebuild production/manufacturing data in detail required to ensure intelligent, efficient, and safe operations at all stages of the maintenance activity. This shall contain the following:
10.3.8.2Disassembly procedures
10.3.8.3Rebuild and repair procedures
10.3.8.4Depot overhaul and maintenance procedures
10.3.8.5Safety requirements (as applicable to depot maintenance)
10.3.8.6Nuclear hardness maintenance requirements.
10.3.9Appendix I.Depot/Class V inspection procedures for all class V items for inclusion in Supply Bulletin (SB) 742-1, when stipulated in the contract by the procuring activity.
10.4Glossary.List abbreviations with definitions for all unique terms and acronyms throughout the study.
10.5Time standards.For each item contained in Appendix A, include engineered estimates established for the time necessary to rebuild the item. These times should be derived from factual data when possible or from examination of the item. In addition to the item rebuild times, failure rates shall also be shown. These failure rates shall be expressed in predicted number of failures per 100 items per year.
10.6Workload figures.The workload contribution of each line item in Appendix A shall be computed as the product of the failure rate times the field density times the quantity per assembly times hours required for each operation. These figures shall be totaled for each shop and for the entire system and an annual shop workload shall be predicted.
10.7.1Peculiarities of the system or end item
