The purpose of this Data Item Description (DID) is to provide information on military systems, sub-systems, support equipment, and facilities battery requirements. This information will be used to control the proliferation of batteries.
This DID is applicable to the acquisition of systems, subsystems, support equipment, and facilities.
This DID contains the format, content, and intended use information for the product resulting for the work task described in the contract SOW.
This DID supersedes DI-MGMT-80772.
Preparation Instructions
1Reference Documents.None.
2Format.The information shall be provided in letter format on 8 1/2 inch by 11-inch paper.
2.1Information can be provided as enclosures with data presented in tabular or graphical format.
3.1This DID contains the format and content preparation instructions for the data product generated by the specific and discrete task requirement as delineated in the contract.
3.2This DID is applicable to the acquisition of systems, sub-systems, support equipment, and facilities.
3.3It is not intended that all the requirements contained herein should be applied to every program (development or non-development) or program phase.However, it shall be required for the acquisition of military systems, sub-systems, equipment, and facilities, which will contain batteries.
3.4This DID will be most effective in the concept/development phase of the acquisition process.
3.5Portions of this DID are subject to tailoring depending upon the program phase in which it is applied in the solicitation/contract, item being procured, and type battery being used.
3.6If a Military Specification battery is being used, only paragraph 3.8.2.9 applies.
3.7General.The battery information provided shall document in detail the following requirements:
3.7.1The function that the battery provides to system, sub-system, support equipment of facility (i.e. start, emergency, primary source, etc.).
3.7.2Design and expected battery performance.
3.7.3Environmental conditions the battery must survive and provide specification performance.
3.7.4Shelf life and charging system data.
3.8.1Introductory information:
3.8.1.1Name of the system, sub-system, support equipment, or facility.
3.8.1.2Contractors name, address, telephone number, and cognizant individual.
3.8.1.3A brief description of system, equipment or facility.
3.8.1.4Purpose and function of battery (i.e. start, emergency, primary source of power etc.).
3.8.2Battery information:
3.8.2.1Dimensions (metric).Attach drawing or sketch if available. Include the dimensions with and without connector for the dimension where pertinent.
3.8.2.3Voltages the battery must supply.
3.8.2.4Current each voltage section must supply.Provide a battery current profile for each voltage section if battery current changes with time.
3.8.2.5For equipment utilizing batteries to perform a start function, provide the following start information:
3.8.2.5.1Start current required vs. time.
3.8.2.5.2Maximum and minimum potential allowed before and during start.
3.8.2.5.3Identify ampere-hours removed from the battery during the preparation for start.
3.8.2.6For equipment utilizing batteries to perform an emergency function, provide following emergency information:
3.8.2.6.1Identify typical battery loading during emergency.
3.8.2.6.2The required operating time during emergency loading.
3.8.2.7Identify how cells in the battery are connected (series, parallel, or series-parallel).
3.8.2.8Electrochemistry (i.e. lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, lithium, etc.).
3.8.2.9Identify battery Military specification, military specification sheet, and their dates.
3.8.2.10Identify battery commercial specification and date.Also, identify the commercial battery part number.
3.8.2.11Rechargeable or non-rechargeable battery.
3.8.2.12Number of cells in the battery.
3.8.2.13Battery capacity measured in ampere-hours at the C-Rate and 25 degrees C.
3.8.3Cell information:(applicable if only an individual cell is used).
3.8.3.1Dimensions (metric).Attach a drawing or sketch if available. Include dimensions with and without connector for the dimension where pertinent.
3.8.3.2Voltage the cell must supply.
3.8.3.3The current the cell must provide.If the current changes with time, provide a copy of the current profile.
3.8.3.4Type of cell connection (terminal post, recessed threaded stud, tab, etc.).
3.8.3.6American National Standards Institute (ANSI) size designation (A, AA, C, D, etc.)
3.8.3.7Military specification, specification sheet, and their publication dates.
3.8.3.8Commercial specification and commercial part number.
3.8.3.9Rechargeable or non-rechargeable.
3.8.3.10Cell capacity measured in ampere-hours at the C-Rate and 25 degrees C.
3.8.4Environmental Information:(applicable to both batteries and cells)
3.8.4.1Shock levels operating, non-operating, and crash safety.
3.8.4.2Vibration levels sine and random, both operating and non-operating.
3.8.4.3Maximum high temperature operating and non-operating.
3.8.4.4Maximum low temperature operating and non-operating.
3.8.4.5Shelf life at 25 degrees C and maximum high temperature non-operating.
3.8.4.6Service life at maximum low temperature operating, 25 degrees C, and maximum high temperature operating.
3.8.5System Information:(applies to both batteries and cells).
3.8.5.1Number of batteries identified in paragraphs 3.8.2 or cells identified in paragraph 3.8.3 are in the equipment.
3.8.5.2Type of charging method used (i.e. constant voltage, constant current etc.).
3.8.5.3For equipment containing chargers, provide the following charging information:
3.8.5.3.1If a constant charge method is used, identify the number of charge steps, current of each charge step and logic (voltage or time) for starting or ending each charge step.Justify why this type of charge is required.
3.8.5.3.2If a constant potential charge method is used identify the voltage the charge will be set at and indicate if it is adjustable.
