Description & Purpose
The Oil Analysis Report provides technical information required to support the maintenance of engines, transmissions, and other components (i.e., hydraulic, final drives) that utilize lubricating oil to reduce friction or wear.
Reports are used to improve operational readiness, promote safety, detect impending component failures and conserve resources by applying on-condition oil changes.
Application & Interrelationship
This Data Item Description (DID) contains the format and content preparation instructions for the data product generated by the specific and discrete task requirement as delineated in the contract.
This Data Item Description should be incorporated into development contracts for equipment anticipated to require the use of lubricating oil(s).
Preparation Instructions
10.1Format.The Oil Analysis Report shall be in the contractor's format. When the contract requires multiple or revised submissions of the Oil Analysis Report, each submission shall retain the format initially utilized.
10.2Content.The Oil Analysis Report shall consist of the following information:
10.2.1.1Oil analysis wearmetal signatures or developed guidelines in parts per million (PPM).
10.2.1.2Identification of normal and abnormal wearlevels in parts per million (PPM) as developed using standard analytical instruments compatible with those used by the Army.
10.2.1.3Acceptable break-in wearmetal levels and length of time required for acceptable break-in of item.
10.2.2.1Description and metallurgy of all moving parts subject to wear and lubricated by the lubricating oil system with identification of critical parts.
10.2.2.2Component and assembly cutaway drawings or sketches which clearly identify critical elements subject to wear.
10.2.3Oil Sampling Valves.
10.2.3.1Locations of sampling valves for obtaining used oil samples for oil analysis.
10.2.3.2The integrity of the used oil sample and the accessibility of the oil sampling valve.
10.2.4Chemical Composition.
10.2.4.1Chemical composition of lubricants that are other than standard specification lubricants.
10.2.5.1List of oil lubricated components (e.g., transmissions, engines, axles, fluid and hydraulic drives) in descending order of failure rates.
10.2.6.1Used oil sampling intervals.
10.2.6.2Used oil change intervals.
10.2.6.3Lubricant physical property limitations (e.g., normal viscosity range, levels of contamination).
