The Topology Report documents a facility's or system's overall HEMP-hardening topology, including its EM barrier, points of entry, protection devices, and mission critical systems, to support HEMP protection evaluation.
The Topology Report applies to both parts of military standard MIL-STD-188-125, High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) Protection for Ground-Based Facilities Performing Critical, Time-Urgent Missions. This DID applies to fixed facilities in accordance with Part I (MIL-STD-188-125-1A) and to transportable systems in accordance with Part II (MIL-STD-188-125-2). This DID contains the format, content, and intended-use information for the data deliverable resulting from the work task described in section 4.3 of each part of MIL-STD-188-125, as applicable.
The purpose of documenting the HEMP-protection subsystem's (HPS') topology is to ensure that the entirety of the facility's or system's required architectural measures for HEMP protection have been sufficiently addressed. Acceptance-test and verification-test teams require the identification of the complete set of these measures in order to effectively and efficiently plan and execute their tests. Site hardness maintenance and hardness surveillance (HM/HS) planners and performers also require the identification of the complete set of these measures in order to assure the lifecycle hardness of the entirety of the HPS.
The Topology Report shall describe the overall HEMP-hardening topology of the facility or system, including the HPS' low-risk electromagnetic (EM) barrier's shield; all points of entry (POEs) that penetrate that shield; all POE protection devices (PPDs); any long-line protection modules (LLPMs); and any mission critical systems (MCS) installed outside the low-risk EM barrier and their associated special protective measures (SPMs). The report shall include a description of all conduits, cables, pipes, power transformers and power lines that penetrate the low-risk EM barrier. The report shall also include any other elements and links connecting the low-risk EM barrier with other low-risk EM barriers (associated with other nearby facilities or systems), and with MCS outside the low-risk EM barrier. The report shall detail the hardness critical items (HCIs) and their configuration management, testability, and corrosion control, as applicable.
The topology report provides the means for the Government to evaluate the overall facility's or system's HEMP protection, including any outlying MCS and other subsystems and their links to the low-risk EM barrier.
If the facility or system already has a topology report, then documentation of the report should be attached as an appendix.
