Description & Purpose
The Packaging Plan contains information on the item characteristics; item packaging, special handling, and transportability requirements; and packaging concepts applicable to an item being developed.
The Packaging Plan provides information required to monitor and evaluate the development of the contractor's planning for packaging of an item.
Application & Interrelationship
This Data Item Description (DID) contains the format and content preparation instructions for the data product generated by the specific and discrete task requirement as delineated in the contract.
The Packaging Plan is applicable to contracts which contain a requirement for the contractor to develop packaging requirements for an item.
The Packaging Plan is related to the following DIDs:

Preparation Instructions
10.1Reference Documents.The applicable issue of the documents cited herein, including their approval dates and dates of any applicable amendments, notices, and revisions, shall be as specified in the contract.
10.2Format.The Packaging Plan shall be in contractor's format.
10.3Content.The Packaging Plan content shall be as follows:
10.3.1Title Page.The title page shall include the contractor's name and address; contract number; project number; security classification; item, equipment or purchase description identification; and document title.
10.3.2Item Description.Describe the characteristics of the item as follows:
10.3.2.1General description, materials of construction, and functional requirements of the unpackaged item.
10.3.2.2Physical characteristics, waterproofness, fragility, and ruggedness of the unpackaged item.
10.3.2.3Chemical properties and corrosion susceptibility of the unpackaged item.
10.3.2.4Chemical and explosive hazards applicable to the unpackaged item.
10.3.2.5Statement of essential or desired life expectancy requirements for the packaged item, i.e., when packaged, the item will be capable of operating after (desired) two years of open storage in a tropical environment, (essential) five years of covered storage in a tropical environment without humidity or temperature control, and (essential) ten years of covered storage in a temperate environment.
10.3.3Transportability Characteristics.Delineate information which addresses the capability of transporting the packaged item safely, efficiently, and effectively using the required modes of transportation.
10.3.4Performance Requirements of Packaging.Describe applicable shipping, handling, and storage environmental requirements for the packaged item as defined in the contract packaging Statement of Work.
10.3.5Identification.Describe standard and special marking requirements for packaging as defined in MIL-STD-129, Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR), and ASTM D3951.
10.3.6Packaging Concepts.Describe all packaging concepts being considered to include performance and cost factors.
10.3.7Packaging Program Schedule and Data Sequence.Detail the packaging development schedule (i.e., packaging plan, packaging design, prototype development and fabrication, inspection and testing, etc.) including the data development sequence as a function of time.
10.3.8Revisions.Major or minor changes to the Packaging Plan shall be issued as Packaging Plan revisions as follows:
10.3.8.1The title page shall bear the notation - Revision - directly under Project Number.Each revision shall use a sequential alphabetical letter after the word Revision to delineate the revision level.
10.3.8.2Required minor changes (i.e., typographical errors) in the plan shall be made by issuing (completely) revised pages for those pages containing the minor changes.Revised pages shall bear the same page numbers as the original pages.
10.3.8.3Major changes (other than minor changes) in the plan shall be made by issuing completely revised pages for all original pages.
10.3.9Signature, Title, and Date.The Packaging Plan and Packaging Plan Revisions shall contain the signature and title of the contractor's authorized representative and shall include the date on which the signature was affixed.
