Special Inspection Equipment (SIE) Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists provide the data required for the limited production of SIE which duplicates the physical and performance characteristics of the original SIE.

a. This Data Item Description (DID) contains the format and content preparation instructions for SIE Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists resulting from the work task described by 5.4.2 of MIL-STD-31000.

b. This DID is applicable to acquisitions of military systems, equipment, and components that require the use of special inspection equipment to achieve the engineering requirements of the item.

c. This DID supersedes DI-SESS-81004E.

Preparation Instructions

1Reference documents. The applicable issue of the documents cited herein, including their approval dates and dates of any applicable amendments, notices, and revisions, shall be as specified in the contract.

2General.SIE Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists shall meet the requirements of MIL-STD-31000. SIE Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists shall be in accordance with ASME Y14.100, or, if applicable, ASME Y14.100 and Appendices B through E, as required, ASME Y14.34, and ASME Y14.41.

3Format. SIE Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists shall be in contractor format or as specified in the contract.

4Content.SIE Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists shall provide the design disclosure information necessary to permit the manufacture of inspection equipment that duplicates the functions of the original SIE. SIE Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists shall include:

4.1Details of processes which are essential to achieving the engineering requirements of the item when these processes are not published or generally available to industry.

4.2Performance ratings and tolerances

4.3Dimensions and tolerances

4.4Critical manufacturing processes and assembly sequences

4.5Toleranced input and output characteristics

4.6Diagrams

4.7Mechanical and electrical connections

4.8Physical characteristics, including form and finish requirements

4.9Details of material identification, including heat treatment and protective coatings

4.10Inspection, test and evaluation criteria

4.11Calibration information

4.12Environmental requirements

4.13Reliability requirements

4.14Maintainability requirements

5Selection of engineering design data. The types of SIE Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists to be prepared shall be selected from ASME Y14.24 and ASME Y14.34.The TDP Option Selection Worksheet incorporated in the contract or purchase order will specify whether the contractor or the Government is responsible for selecting the types of SIE Engineering Design Data and associated lists to be prepared.

6CAGE Code and document numbers. SIE Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists will be identified with the contractor's CAGE Code and contractor document numbers or with a Government CAGE Code and Government document numbers as specified in the TDP Option Selection Worksheet as stated in the contract.

7Control drawings.Vendor items used in the SIE, without alteration, selection, or source qualification, shall be identified on SIE Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists by the vendor's CAGE Code and item identification. Vendor Item Control Drawings are not required for vendor items. When vendor items must be altered, selected, or require source qualification prior to use in the SIE, they shall be documented on Altered Item, Selected Item, or Source Control Drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.24.

8Operating instructions. SIE Engineering Design Data and Associated Lists shall include references to applicable SIE Operating Instructions, SIE Descriptive Documentation and SIE Calibration Procedures, when these data are required by the contract or purchase order.
