This document establishes the engineering criterion for the selection and application of mechanical fasteners for both air vehicles and aircraft stores. The overall objective of this document is to provide design activities or integrated product teams (IPTs) with fastener subsystem standard policies and design information; it documents selection and application information for fastening systems and procedures so the designers or IPTs can achieve an optimum balance of performance, reliability, and standardization with minimum cost, logistic inventory and maintenance.
This Data Item Description (DID) contains the format, content, and intended use information for the data product resulting from the work task described by the contract SOW.
This DID supersedes DI-SESS-82231.

1Reference documentsThe applicable issue of the documents cited herein, including their approval dates and dates of any applicable amendments, notices, and revisions, shall be as specified in the contract.

3ContentThe Airframe Fastener Usage Guidelines shall contain the following:
3.1Fastener Usage ApproachDescribe the approach for developing and implementing uniform requirements applicable to aerospace fasteners that are capable of preserving the structural integrity and material compatibility of the system's elements being joined. The approach shall address fastener attributes such as: the process for development of fastened joint allowables; designation of external and internal thread form; definition of minimum diameter of structural fasteners; definition of drive and wrenching element configurations; identification of usage limitations specific to external and internal threaded fasteners, washers, inserts, studs and pins, rivets and blind fasteners, door and access panels, single point linkages, potential for galvanic corrosion).
3.2Describe controls to optimize performance, reliabilityand quality of fasteners while minimizing cost, fastener variety, logistic inventory and maintenance tasking.
3.3Describe the contractor's engineering knowledge baseof fasteners and their appropriate application (i.e., a compilation of contractor best practices and lessons learned for designers/design teams who must select and apply various fasteners to system components).
3.4Describe exceptions and/or deviations fromthe JSSG-2009 Fastener subsystem guidelines as applicable to the system with justification for the exception and/or deviation.
3.5Joining MethodsDescribe processes for joining and securing airframe/store structural members, air vehicle/store components, access panels, and doors while preserving the structural integrity of the elements being joined.
3.6Common FastenersDescribe the plan for use of common fasteners without compromising performance.
