The Required Manufacturing Process Description for Additive Mfg. (RMPD-AM) provides manufacturing criteria necessary to properly manufacture an item using an additive manufacturing process and equipment. The RMPD-AM is created as an element of the Technical Data Package (TDP) when it is determined that the additive manufacturing process must be defined and controlled to the extent necessary that it is considered a required manufacturing process. RMPD-AM will typically be ordered only when a Product Level TDP is required and the TDP is a Type 3D per MIL-STD-31000. (Note: The Required Manufacturing Process Description described in MIL-STD-31000C was previously known as the Critical Manufacturing Process Description.)
This Data Item Description (DID) contains the format and content preparation instructions for RMPD-AM resulting from the work task described in 5.4.8 of MIL-STD-31000. The RMPD-AM will comply with this DID and the requirements of ASME Y14.46 Product Definition for Additive Manufacturing.

Preparation Instructions
1Reference documentsThe applicable issue of the documents cited herein, including their approval dates and dates of any applicable amendments, notices, and revisions, shall be as specified in the contract.
2GeneralThe RMPD-AM, when required, shall meet the requirements of MIL-STD-31000 and form an element of the TDP. The RMPD-AM is used in conjunction with the other portions of the TDP, to include the Additive Manufacturing Engineering Design Data File (AM Data File) in the manufacturing process.
3FormatRMPD-AM shall be in the contractor's format, or as specified on the contract and the TDP Option Selection Worksheet. The header of the RMPD-AM shall contain as a minimum the following: Title, CAGE Code and RMPD number, specification number (if applicable), RMPD Revision and date, Item Nomenclature, Item Part Number to which the RMPD-AM applies. 4ContentThe RMPD-AM shall contain the following sections as applicable. (Each section will only be mandated when necessary to ensure the required performance.):
aMaterialIdentification and description of material, material composition, material pre-processing, material re-use, material standards, material properties, and/or material certification to be used in the AM process.
bMachineIdentification and description of allowable AM machine(s) or class of machine, equipment calibration requirements, machine parameters, environmental conditions during manufacture, machine critical Bottom of Build (BOB) configuration, and/or other machine requirements.
cMachine softwareIdentification and description of the AM machine software and/or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) firmware requirements and/or revision to be used
dPart orientation and setupIdentification and description of the part orientation and location, build surface, part spacing, build specification, support structures, test coupons or other part setup requirements.
eBuild parametersIdentification and description of the machine build parameters during manufacture.
fAM Data File requirementsIdentification and description of the AM Engineering Design Data File to be used, identification and description of other AM files (e.g. .stl file, slice file) or other AM File requirements.
gPost processingIdentification and description of any post processing requirements (to include requirements for test coupons if applicable).
